Archeologists are just one step away from finding the thousandth birch bark manuscript in Veliki Novgorod. If the rate of successful digging remains the same, the boundary of 1000 historical documents will be conquered during this season. Texts of the most recently found manuscripts are being decoded by experts now. One of the fragments is bilaterial, with some of the words clearly readable. The first birchbark manuscript was unearthed in Novgorod by Nina Akulova, on July, 26th, 1951. It happened in the course of diggings in the Velikaya Street. Last season archeologists were not lucky enough to find a single manuscript in the city, whereas this year the very first find – Manuscript 974 – was followed by a number of others.
